Exciting young staying horse LETHAL JONES, has come through his first serious staying test in flying colours and we are looking forward to the him taking his place in the upcoming W.A.Derby in a fortnights time. There are always behind the scene stories when a horse wins any race and there is nothing different about the win of LETHAL JONES.

Jason Whiting who rode the horse on Saturday had the choice a few weeks ago between some exciting two and three year olds moving towards the Karrakatta Plate and the Derby which can be an enviable position to be in however if you make the wrong choice, it can be a bitter pill to swallow. Especially if the "reject" goes on and performs better than the selected ride. That is the risk that any rider takes and at the end of the day they have to live and die by the decisions they make. When Jason had the choice to ride either LETHAL JONES or ROHAN in the J.C.Roberts Quality at their previous starts, I was keen for Jason to ride our horse however I was not confident which way he would go. He chose to stick with the stable and I could see the disappointment in his face when the horse he got off won the race and our horse came in five lengths further back.

Move forward two weeks and the situation was reversed when LETHAL JONES showed why the stable has such a high opinion of his staying ability, when the horse unleashed a mighty finishing effort to get up and win the final lead up to the Derby putting a smile back on the dial of "the fish." I have to say that at the half way point of the race when Jason had LETHAL JONES back in second last position and off the bridle, I was starting to question whether we may have made a huge mistake in our assessment of the horses ability. To their credit, both horse and rider gained confidence in each other the further they went making it a huge result for the stable and the owners in general.

Whilst only one part owner, Greg Dick, was present at the races on Saturday, both Colin Crossley and Colin Hounsell, will travel down and across from Darwin and Airlie Beach for the "grand final" in a couple of weeks. I' looking forward to catching up with both guys as I have a bit of construction work to do down on my farm the following week so bring your work clobber boys!Lou Lucianihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11840099956582858329noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2593365177393140836.post-53269120294410120122012-03-09T05:33:00.000+08:002012-03-09T05:33:50.317+08:00LETHAL MAY BE A SECRET WEAPON

LETHAL JONES shown winning at Bunbury recently may prove to be a big improver as the distances of his races get longer over the next few weeks.

The lightly raced three year old has shown enough ability in track work to suggest that staying is his forte and the few times we have put some distance into his races, his performances have improved out of sight. His half brother CAMPOBELLO was at his best when he got up to 2200m and LETHAL JONES appears to be heading in the same direction.

Although he is still a bit of an "ugly duckling" with quite a loose action and a wayward mind, I can see nothing but improvement from this horse over the next few preparations. Hopefully he improves quickly enough to warrant him taking his place in the 2012 W.A. DERBY which will be run in mid April.Lou Lucianihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11840099956582858329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2593365177393140836.post-70698575954343909692012-02-17T08:45:00.000+11:002012-02-17T08:45:42.546+11:00CHICKEN AND THE EGG BACK UP ARTICLE!!!
Following an article which I posted on this site some weeks ago, one of my clients has sent me in the following story published in a well respected racing journal last week. Thanks for the article Jill!

The 2YO Death Spiral

Breednet - Media Release - Wednesday, 15 February 2012

Byron Rogers of Performance Genetics has posted an interesting piece of editorial on the merits of two year-old racing and why we should not allow a decline in this area.

Byron Rogers - A death spiral is potentially awaiting us. Internationally, there has been a decline in the annual thoroughbred crop with thoroughbred numbers dropping from a high in the mid 1990′s towards levels in some areas that have not been recorded since the 1950′s

In years to come, there will be significantly smaller foal crops, and without rationalization of racetrack numbers in a meaningful way, racetracks will be putting on races with smaller field sizes which equals lesser betting handle and overall interest in the game, smaller crowds at racetracks, anaemic returns to owners, lower yearling sale prices, lesser foals, and the spiral goes on….

Setting aside racetrack rationalization as an obvious if painful solution, there is a greater underlying issue in terms of genetics and performance as it relates to the thoroughbred that may in fact accelerate this potential death spiral. When it comes to dealing with smaller racing populations, racing administrators and indeed Graded/Group stakes committees around the world seem to all gravitate to one easy solution – reduce the influence/opportunity for two year old racing. It is an easy target.

After all, horses do have issues from time to time and two year olds are always a day to day proposition especially in terms of shin soreness and airway disease. Indeed Graded/Group stakes committees in Australia and to a lesser extent in North America, seem to have really taken a hatchet to the stakes schedule for two year olds, reducing their influence in a dramatic way. In America, one only has to look at the storied history of the Saratoga 2yo races – the Saratoga Special,Sanford Stakes and Hopeful Stakes and their impact on the breed to understand how important two year old racing is to the thoroughbred as a whole.

A push towards a reduction of 2YO racing is also a somewhat popular theory among those that decry 2yo racing as a cause for the reduction in soundness in the breed as a whole.

Setting aside the 2yo in training sales, where horses are often asked to perform at speeds that they will never attain in race competition again, nothing could be further from the truth. In a study released today in the Equine Veterinary Journal, it has been shown that horses that race at two subsequently have longer and more successful careers. The study, which looked at some 4683 horses born in New Zealand, found that horses that raced as 2yo's had significantly more years of racing than those that first raced as 3yo's or older and those that raced as 2yo's had a greater total earnings than those that first raced at a later age.

This study in some ways mirrored and Australian study completed over a decade ago which had similar findings, and also confirms other studies (that can be found here, here and here), that showed that exercise early in a horses career conferred significant benefits in overall musculoskeletal health of the horse. The significant associations found in this study are similar to those that were found in a companion study on Standardbred Horses born in the same year as the thoroughbred study.

While the Standardbred and Thoroughbred are different breeds, it seems that 2YO performance is of importance to future racing performance outcomes, no matter what the breed.

Provided proper training and management practices of 2yo's are adhered to, having horses in training and racing at this age seems to benefit the musculoskeletal health of the horse and confer survival time in terms of the number of years that the horse races.

Studies have shown that up to 50% of all thoroughbreds born fail to race. More concerning is that ~32% of that 50% are horses that never even reach a trainer to attempt to race. If it is not just a factor of oversupply, this my be an area where the scientific community and the racing administrators can come together and work out why this is occurring and how to change this in order to optimize the utilization of the racing population. Regardless of this, it is just as imperative that racing administrators maintain a strong and robust 2YO racing schedule, even if it is a ‘loss leader' in terms of betting handle.

As this study confirms, in reducing the opportunity for two year old racing, which is going to be the most likely initial reaction of smaller racing crops, racing administrators may in fact be doing the exact opposite to ensure that they have full race fields in years to come and accelerate the industry into a death spiral.

WILD CHARGER once again showed by his win on Saturday that he is well and truly a bit better than average. The horse was racing first up from a spell and took on a quality field of race fit performers when coming from well back to get up in the last few bounds to score. The lightly raced son of Trade Fair, has now put together a very impressive strike rate of wins and placings, defeating some above average performers along the way.

On Saturday, Jason Whiting again gave the horse every chance to find his feet before getting him out into the clear on the corner and going on to win well. RETIREMENT???It has never ceased to amaze me how truth never seems to get in the way of a story when it comes to anything remotely to do with racing. Over the years I have had more than a few digs at journo's over the way stories are reported however I must say that the latest story to be reported to me did not involve any journalist but fellow participants in the industry.

I was at the track on Wednesday morning when a trainer came up and told me how my name had come up in discussion the previous day amongst a group of trainers. The "facts" of the conversation were that I was retiring from training and moving south to set up an aggistment property.

This is as good a time to put the story and the "facts" into context so that you can hear it straight from the horses mouth. Pardon the pun!!

Firstly, anyone who knows me would know that there is about as much chance of me ever retiring as there is of me winning lotto. Considering I rarely buy a lotto ticket, I would say that the chances are remote.

What I have done is purchase a property down south which has been a long held ambition and dream of mine to do, which can serve me in a number of ways. It is close enough to Amelia Park where we spell and pre-train most of our horses, enabling me to play a bigger role in the running of that property and the horses there on. Secondly it gives Dion the freedom to put his own stamp on the way things are done at our Ascot stables without me being there to look over his shoulder every day. It then allows me the time to set up my small property in a way that I can spell a few of my own horses and maybe one day pre-train a few of my own from the property.

The few broodmares which I am involved with will also naturally live at my property however I am not likely to challenge Mungrup nor Heytesbury Studs for the role of Breeder of the Year! All of this while getting back to my Italian roots and growing a few vegies etc and hopefully enjoying my working life even more. I will still be in attendance at Ascot trackwork on some mornings and will also be at the races on most days.

The simple fact is that now that I have Dion on board, it enables the business to expand in different directions giving us both new challenges and slightly different roles. I really believe that we can utilise the top class facilities at Amelia Park to a far greater level than they are currently which will hopefully end up producing happier and sounder horses to take to the races. If anyone can say that building fences and erecting sheds and horse shelters in my spare time whilst not training horses is retirement then I guess, yes; I must be going into retirement! Can anyone tell me how I apply for my seniors card?Lou Lucianihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11840099956582858329noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2593365177393140836.post-18872956095383950122012-01-12T20:12:00.003+11:002012-01-13T09:50:32.787+11:00NOT FAMOUS JUST YET BUT MAYBE SOON?????

YOUNG LIONEL sprints hard down the outside to score a brilliant first up win with Jason Whiting on top.

Yesterday we took three runners to Pinjarra and I expected all three to run nice races. Whilst the first two performed well and the last one was disappointing, I was particularly keen on the horse having his first start called YOUNG LIONEL. The horse had trialled well and his work suggested a forward showing. On top of that he was out of a top class mare which I trained in the mid 90's called PRIME AGAIN.( Shit I am getting bloody old!!!)

Now a maiden winner at Pinjarra may not seem any big deal however this horse has already had enough setbacks along the way to make even the most patient admirer begin to show signs of frustration. Not to mention the fact that his loyal group of owners, who have raced many good horses with me since the early 90's, hadn't had a winner since 2007.

The horse jumped the crossing on his way to the barriers, almost leaving his jockey sitting on the track but to make matters worse, the race caller made mention just before the horses were loaded up, that there hadn't been many if any "famous Lionel's " over the years and he wondered how this horse got his name. If we weren't all feeling a bit edgy by now we soon were when the horse straightened up with only one horse behind him.

Typical of most rides from Jason Whiting, the horse settled well back in the field giving his opposition a good head start. The horse soon began to lengthen stride when pulled to the outside and a placing looked possible with 200m left to run. Then when Jason really asked the horse for an effort, he looked like he just joined in as he went past the leaders in the shadows of the post to record a very impressive first up win. The way he won suggests that there may be a few more good wins in store for this horse and I am confident that he will improve as his races get longer.

Perhaps one of the part owners, Lyle Bailey may tell the story about how the horse got his name one day however for the time being I think the owners are just happy getting a runner back to the track and into the winners stall after a long absence from both. I have to say that it gave me extra pleasure winning for such a loyal group of owners who have raced horses with me for nearly two decades having plenty of fun and success along the way. As I continue to say......... "There is nothing quite like the feeling of winning races for nice people!"
Her win at Ascot last week suggests that there may be even more wins in store for her providing we can place her in suitable races over the next few months where she is not weighted out of her age group. As is quite often the case here in Perth, it doesn't take long to get up in the weights with a form horse however coming back down in the weights can take a whole lot longer.

STACKS ON has only been lightly raced and has been well placed winning 3 of her 6 starts with a 2nd, 3rd and 4th at her other three runs. Being a small filly, I do not expect it will be long before we need to engage a claiming apprentice to ride the filly so as to give her every opportunity to maintain her consistent form. Jason whiting has ridden the filly in all but one of her starts and the two of them appear to get on well come race day. Just when it looked as though she would be run down in the run to the line last week, the filly showed great fighting qualities to get to the line in front. She is likely to start again in a similar race at Ascot on Saturday January 7th.
Which came first, the chicken or the egg? I believe that the answer to that question is a lot more complex than the question I have asked many times recently to which so far I have not had a good enough answer.

My concern is with the programming (or more to the point the lack of programming ) of early season two year old races. I guess at the same time there will also be the question of how early is too early to run two year old races in a season however that is another point entirely.

Let me give you some statistics. The three states of Victoria, NSW and W.A all start racing two year olds at about the same time of the year. In fact the eastern states are a week before W.A. In Victoria, there are 21 two year old races programmed from the start of the 2yo season up until December 31st. These are run on city tracks and provincial tracks. There is a two year old race run on most week ends or at worst at a mid week provincial meeting. In NSW the number is slightly less at 18. Both of these states seem to cater for early season two year olds and both states have massive 2yo stakemoney races such as the Blue Diamond and the Golden Slipper Stakes.

In W.A. over the same period of time we have SIX races programmed and that comes with the threat that if there are not enough acceptors, the race will be called off! Now I am not saying for one moment that everything they do in the east should be done over here however the difference in the number of races available is somewhat staggering.

The reason given by those in charge of programming is that since the Karrakatta Plate was shifted to the Autumn, trainers hold back running 2yo's and so there are less horses in work and hence they programme less 2yo races. My argument is that if as a trainer with a big team of young horses, I knew that there was a two year old race programmed weekly as there is in the east, I would have a lot more 2yo's in work early to try to get an early return for my owner as well as qualifying my horse for the better autumn races. From a business point of view, it does not make sense for me to have 20 two year olds in the stables in October November and December when there is only one race every two weeks that I can compete in! It is simply bad business.

It intrigues me that we continue to remove distance races from the programme as we no longer breed stayers; Yet, we breed for speed but don't programme races for early maturing young speed horses to run in. Doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me. I have also often wondered about the theory against running 2yo's early and the perception that they don't train on. The list below from my stables alone does not support that belief.

Over the years I have had many 2yo winners with many of them winning one of the very early programmed races. The likes of EAGLE FLYER, TIMELESS ACTION, BUSINESS BEAT, LOCK THE VAULT, DARING HOMBRE, STORMY'S SON and others all won pre Xmas races whilst horses like HARDRADA, AMYQUILL, KING CANUTE, GUYNO, ISLAND MORN MR TANZANIA and HARD ACT all were either raced or trialled as early two year olds with most of them winning as two year olds. Each and every one of those horses went on to race and win as three year olds, four year olds and beyond.

Back when the Karrakatta Plate was run before Xmas, the winner and most of the field invariably went on to become the states top three and four year olds. Whether horses train on or not has more to do with training methods of two year olds and the surface on which they race and trial, rather than at what stage they are put under pressure. Obviously an immature young horse is less likely to stand up to the rigours of early season racing however far be it that early runners do not train on.

So back to the chicken and the egg. Do trainers not have two year olds in work because there are so very few opportunities for them to compete in or is there so few races programmed because there are so few two year olds in work? As I said earlier, if there were more races available, I like many other trainers with big teams of young horses would have no hesitation in having them up and running, ready to go from October 1st onwards.

I am not for one moment suggesting that we go 2yo mad and have all our two year olds galloping in August. Each to their own. Some trainers prefer to train late developing horses, others enjoy training young horses whilst others including myself prefer to have an even mix of babies and older horses. If only we had races for the youngsters in my team to run in!!

Thank you)Lou Lucianihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11840099956582858329noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2593365177393140836.post-25770154913228631882011-12-08T16:44:00.001+11:002011-12-09T09:54:16.701+11:00MY OLD MATE IS BACK IN THE STABLESI know I have said it before but there is no doubt in my mind that when my old mate and top class performer GUYNO is in the stables, there is a completely different feel about the place. Even though he is getting on in years, the old boy loves the stable life and routine and it doesn't take him long to let all the other horses in the stable know that he is back and he is in charge! The world or the stables at least, revolve around GUYNO and he makes sure everyone is aware of it.

GUYNO had a few minor leg issues after he returned from Adelaide however the main reason for his lengthy time off was a severe case of colic back in late May which nearly claimed his life. Typical of his fighting spirit, the horse pulled through where many others would have given up however he did lose a heap of weight. It has taken a long time to get the horse back into top condition however thanks to some great care and attention by my good friend Bruce Kay who nursed the horse throughout his ordeal, the horse is once again full of cheek and looking somewhere near his best. With another month or so of good feed and slow work, I reckon the old boy will be ready to let rip again.

At this stage, there are no set plans for the old boy however another trip across to the east coast would certainly not be beyond him. The local country cups are always an option however he is always asked to carry top weight here in Perth so it may be a case of running where he is best weighted. We will decide which way we go after we step up his work and assess his fitness and keenness in another month or so.Lou Lucianihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11840099956582858329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2593365177393140836.post-90266485609820142392011-12-08T16:29:00.002+11:002011-12-09T09:51:40.114+11:00STACKS ON IN EASY WIN

Smart filly STACKS ON cruises to the line to record an easy first up victory with Jason Whiting on board

Promising 3yo filly STACKS ON won the second race of her career when she defeated a smart mid week field at Ascot yesterday. The lightly raced daughter of last seasons leading first season sire, SAXON, was having her first start for this campaign and only her fifth lifetime start. The filly had previously won over 1000m at Belmont earlier in the season as well as running a very close second at her race track debut.

After being slightly slow away, regular rider Jason Whiting was quick to put the filly into a commanding position before the corner and when asked for an effort in the straight she quickly set up a comfortable winning margin. Whilst the stock of SAXON should get better with age and when they step up to 1400m and further, I feel that this filly will always be best placed in short course racing.

The filly is not overly big however she is strong and sound and has a terrific will to win which should ensure she can maintain her current winning strike rate for a good bit longer yet. She is likely to have her next start in Saturday company in a couple of weeks.Lou Lucianihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11840099956582858329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2593365177393140836.post-80888005979156859122011-11-25T17:03:00.004+11:002011-11-25T17:12:30.832+11:00BIG BOO DOES IT AGAIN

Jason Whiting urges DONT SAY BOO to the line to record a very easy win at Ascot on Wednesday.

Every now and then a galloper comes along which continues to surprise. DON'T SAY BOO is one such galloper. When the owners approached me to train the horse, I must admit to taking the horse on with some reluctance. Whilst he had the makings of a star in the owners eyes, his form to me suggested that he would have a pretty limited future. Still the owners were keen so we took him on. When he arrived at my stables after six weeks of pre-training at Bindoon, he was in superb condition however I was even less inclined to have him in the stables when I discovered he was a bad wind sucker. Then we were informed that the horse had hung off the track at one of his last starts and he had a few other issues. This was one horse who was on borrowed time!!

To everyones surprise, the more work we did with the horse, the more we liked him, After his first up performance, I figured he would win one at Northam but that would be it. His second up run was a disaster so naturally I figured I was right once again. How wrong I was. The horse has gone on to mature and gain in confidence with each outing and he has now won three mid-week races for us along with a couple of placings. It has never ceased to amaze me how big strong looking animals are invariably the slowest to actually mature and learn what it is all about and this guy was no exception.
His win at Ascot on Wednesday was not only his best win at the end of a fairly lengthy preparation, but the horse showed how far he has come since joining the stables and just how much he is enjoying himself. Once again his owners were on hand to cheer him home and enjoy the moment. We will decide over the next few days whether or not the big boy has one more run this preparation or whether we give him a break now. It is hard to stop on a horse that has just recorded a three length victory however unlike when he first arrived, I now reckon he has the potential to win in Saturday company next campaign.

Giant sized galloper DON'T SAY BOO brought up his second win for the stable yesterday and in doing so continued the consistent form he has shown over the past few months. The horse was having his seventh run for our stable yesterday and in that time he has put two wins and three placings on the board.

Jason Whiting was again in charge of the horse and I have to admit that I was far from confident of getting a result after the horse was settled in behind the leader and locked away on the fence. At the end of the day, Jason whiting showed why he is so highly regarded by my stable with a 10 out of 10 ride to get the money in impressive style. Never one to get flustered in a race, Jason was happy to put the horse in the exact position which I thought would not suit him however his win suggests that the big horse may be gaining in confidence with the benefit of recent racing and he not only forced a run between horses but he also sprinted at the line hard when asked to extend.

The horse was having his second run for the week and will now wait a fortnight at least before we take him back to the races. The win was a nice tonic for one of his part owners who is not enjoying the best of health however the look on his face whilst surrounded by a bevvy of beauties while watching the replay back at my place last night suggests that his illness may be sympathy related!! Good luck to you guys.
Lou Lucianihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11840099956582858329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2593365177393140836.post-84813205609894435352011-11-08T09:50:00.001+11:002011-11-08T10:28:43.187+11:00BABIES STARTING TO SHOW FORMThis season, Dion and I have managed to build up our 2yo numbers and over the next few months we will produce some of them on the race track. We made a conscious decision earlier in the year that we would not have any of the babies ready for the first couple of races as they would be far better served enjoying the spring feed in the paddock. The fact that there are only 2 races programmed in a six week period also gave us no incentive to have the stables full of 2yo's. Over the next few weeks we will step out some promising types at the trials however most of them are likely to head straight back to the paddock to give them more time to develop and mature.

At yesterdays Belmont trials we took six unraced 2yo's along of which three had trialled the week previous at Lark Hill and the other three were first timers. I was pleasantly surprised as to how well they all performed as we rarely have our babies wound up for the trials.

In the first set of trials we had the first and second placegetters in AVUNCULAR and ENOUGH ATTITUDE. Both of these babies are by Heytesbury Studs first season stallion Husson Lightning who if yesterdays trial performances are anything to go by, looks like enjoying a promising season.

The second trial of the day produced another stable quinella with Holy Roman Emperor filly SONGBURG winning in great style from first timer DREAM MERGER running a very nice second. Both horses hit the line well and both are sure to be prominent when we produce them at the track. Depending on barrier draws and how they come through yesterday's gallops, a couple of them are likely to step out this weekend.

In a later trial we stepped out an unraced Lonhro gelding making his first public appearance. The horse named TEMPLES, showed some natural speed and ability to win his trial in great style ensuring that the hype surrounding his breeding is likely to get even stronger with the win. We will see how he comes through his trial before we look for a suitable starting point for him.
All in all, we are getting together a nice team of young horses which should be able to perform on the big stage when they are produced over the next few months. Hopefully we can unearth a few stars amongst them all which can take their place in the better races over the next few seasons.Lou Lucianihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11840099956582858329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2593365177393140836.post-33879285797094883102011-10-28T10:40:00.004+11:002011-11-01T12:56:34.154+11:00ASCOT DOUBLE TO TEAM LUCIANI

Jason whiting urges JACKSON ROCKS to a comfortable win at Ascot on Wednesday. Whilst the meeting at Ascot on Wednesday may have been a fairly low key affair, the day will certainly be remembered by my son Dion and I as being the day that we prepared our first city double. Even though it was only a mid week meeting, winning a double is a great effort in any trainers book. The double came courtesy of two great rides from stable rider Jason Whiting who steered two low rated horses to impressive victories. The horses involved are LITTLE LARRIKIN and JACKSON ROCKS. Both horses had won their maidens at Toodyay and Mt Barker, hardly the place one would consider to be stepping stones for city racing however both have shown city class potential.
LITTLE LARRIKIN was unplaced at his first two race starts however this was due to shin soreness and injuries sustained in running. The unfortunate part of that is with two unplaced runs the horse found it hard to get starts when we needed him to. Taking him to Toodyay enabled him win a race and then avoid the ballot when nominated for the lower rating races. Now that he has won again we can be more choosy as to when and where he runs. The horse has shown city class potential from day one and I am confident he can continue to win his way through the classes. The horse was nominated for a similar race at Ascot on Cup day however he drew the outside barrier and we opted to leave him at home. There is a similar race at Ascot available for him next Wednesday where he may be better placed providing he draws a barrier.
JACKSON ROCKS came to my stables as a raced horse who had broken through for his maiden win at Mt Barker. Whilst the horse has been very consistent at all of his starts for us, he was being hampered by wide barriers and bad luck in running. On Wednesday, the horse drew the inside barrier which enabled him to take up a handy position in running. The horse always looked the winner in running however he was held up before the corner and it was a typical cool and patient ride from the fish to get the horse through late to get the money. The horse was a late scratching from a 2200m race at Northam on Sunday, a race he looked well placed in. The owners were keen to go to Northam however after Dion and I assessed the Ascot field, we decided that the race at Ascot looked very winnable and was the better way to go with him. Dion convinced the owners of this and as they say in the classics, the rest is history! JACKSON ROCKS may butter up again on Cup day over 1800m however if we want to give him a bit more time there is a similar race available for him at Ascot the following week.Lou Lucianihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11840099956582858329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2593365177393140836.post-85205254028227255182011-10-12T14:41:00.005+08:002011-10-12T15:13:39.967+08:00LITTLE LARRIKIN OPENS HIS WINNING ACCOUNT.

The part owners and the co-trainers look pretty pleased with the result after the win of LITTLE LARRIKIN in the first race at TOODYAY on the weekend.

Lightly raced three year old LITTLE LARRIKIN opens up his winning account at the TOODYAY meeting last Saturday. It was a very comfortable win and he was well handled by his apprentice rider Jayce Buckley who was having his first ride on the horse. The way he ran away from his opposition in the straight suggests that there may be another win or two in the young bloke. I have always been a big supporter of the Toodyay meeting and love racing horses at the track. I genuinely believe that racing as a whole is poorer for the closure of Toodyay.

Photos courtesy Hollands Photographics - more photos can be seen at www.hollandsracetrackphotos.com
Lou Lucianihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11840099956582858329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2593365177393140836.post-24233430299557899172011-09-29T07:45:00.005+08:002011-09-30T06:44:31.689+08:00BOO TO YOU TOO!!Four year old gelding DON'T SAY BOO put his running shoes on yesterday to get away from his opposition in a way which suggests that there may be more wins in store for the big son of Kendal Star.

DON'T SAY BOO is a newcomer to the stables and yesterday he was having only his third start for us. After an impressive first up performance, the horse over-raced second up when we stepped him up to 1700m. Conditions on the day as well as the lack of speed in the race brought about his undoing on that occasion, however aided by a clever ride from jockey Jason Whiting, DON'T SAY BOO never looked in doubt yesterday.
It is always nice to get a win on the board for new owners and as we say here at LUCIANI RACING ............ "it's nice to win races for nice people."

Progressive young galloper, confirmed his ranking as one of the states most progressive young horses with another strong victory at Belmont on Saturday. Starting a heavily backed odds on favourite, WILD CHARGER again settled towards the rear of the field in the 1400m event and aided by a typical calm and patient tide from regular jockey Jason Whiting, rounded up the field in less than a furlong to win pulling up.

This was the second time in eight days that the son of Trade Fair was able to win at Belmont courtesy of similar rides from Jason. We had been tossing up with the idea of giving the horse a break after his previous win however he had come through the run so well we opted for another race.

We now have the dilemma of deciding whether to give him another run in a similar race next weekend or turn him out for a four to six week spell and have him back racing after the carnival. As is usually the case with our horses, we will let the horse tell us which way he wants to go and we certainly wont be pushing the issue. At this stage, the horse is telling me that he loves the stable life and another race would be ideal. Considering he only had a saddle on once between runs, I guess he can't complain about being overworked!!!

Smart galloper WILD CHARGER showed by his impressive win at Belmont on Saturday that he has the potential to measure up to better company and could be a bit better than average. WILD CHARGER covered the 1200m in 1.09.75, final 600m in 33.36 which is close to low level flying by normal standards at Belmont. Once again the horse settled back in the field and was brought onto the scene late with a well timed run by regular jockey Jason Whiting to win in easy style.

WILD CHARGER has been a relatively sound horse and an easy horse to train however this preparation has been a bit of a headache for us and the farriers after the horse had a "seedy" toe cut out which left him feeling a bit uncomfortable in his action for close to a month. It has only been over the past few weeks that we have had the horse sound enough to take back to the races and he has run very nice races on both occasions that we have started him.

The horse has come through his run in good style and has been nominated to run at Belmont again this weekend. If he does run it is likely to be his last start for this campaign as I would like to give the horse a short break during the spring and have him back for some nice races in the autumn. If he doesn't run on Sunday he will start the following week in a similar race.Lou Lucianihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11840099956582858329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2593365177393140836.post-28495077734683720752011-09-08T07:00:00.003+08:002011-09-30T06:50:34.192+08:00EXCLUSIVE HONOUR IN BRILLIANT FIRST UP WIN.

EXCLUSIVE HONOUR gets up in the last stride to win well courtesey of a top class ride from "The Fish"

At Belmont yesterday, we stepped out a young horse which appears to have above average ability and I am looking forward to the future with him. EXCLUSIVE HONOUR, was starting first up after a good spell which followed his impressive debut performance where he ran second in a similar race back in May.

The horse which was purchased cheaply at last years Yarradale Stud annual yearling sale, has developed into an exciting looking type and his win yesterday suggests that there may very well be more wins in store for him. EXCLUSIVE HONOUR is a son of Medal Of Honour by Danehill and there is a lot of Danehill about this horse. He shapes at track work as a real short course type however his racing manner indicates that he will be better suited when he gets up over 1400m and maybe further.

At this stage we will place the horse through his classes however I have no doubt he can step up to better company at some stage this campaign.Lou Lucianihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11840099956582858329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2593365177393140836.post-74229268276918159742011-09-08T06:31:00.005+08:002011-09-08T06:46:31.552+08:00AMELIAS DANCER and AYTOZED make it win number 2&3.

The win of AMEIAS DANCER was full of merit with the horse conceding weight to every other runner and settling down towards the rear of the field. Another classic sit back ride from Jason Whiting paved the way for an easy impressive win, suggesting that there are sure to be more wins in store for this progressive horse.

AYTOZED showed that he could well develop into a handy performer over the next few months with a strong win on Wednesday to break his maiden status. This horse will be raced through the classes where I am sure he is capable of winning his way into Saturday company. At this stage he is likely to tackle a similar race in ten days time.Lou Lucianihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11840099956582858329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2593365177393140836.post-45647412505642886412011-08-22T10:09:00.000+08:002011-08-22T10:09:31.390+08:00FINALLY I GOT HOLD OF IT..... The horse to provide the new team with the maiden victory was the consistent and promising galloper AMELIAS DANCER. The horse was racing first up after a short break and dropping back from 2200m to 1600m. AMELIAS DANCER has always displayed above average ability and I must admit that I thought he would meaasure up as a stayer this campaign. After watching him race over a middle distance at his previous three runs, I was not as confident about his staying ability and we decided to switch him back to the shorter journey. I think with a bit more age and experience the horse is capable of making it in suitable country Cups and the first one of those may be the Boulder Cup at Kalgoorlie in three weeks time. The fast tempo and the 1760m should be ideal for him.
